If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. You are helping me reach my goal of blogging full time goal by 2012 and I truly appreciate it! Feel free to check back in on my monthly progress updates. Thanks for visiting! I have been getting lazy with Mr. Pug’s medicine routine and am trying to get back on track. It’s nice to have a healthy Pug and I don’t want to fall back into bad habits.
Here’s the schedule I just made for myself (again):
Daily
- Put a steroid pill (Prednisone) in his morning food.
- Put in eye drops at night.
Twice a Week
- Clean his ears with cotton balls and medicated ear wash.
- Clean his face with medicated face wash.
Weekly
- Bathe him with a medicated shampoo.
- Spray him with a liquid topical spray if he has flare-ups.
Hopefully I’ll stay on track so he never has to go back to the very expensive pet dermatologist. I just get so tired of the constant work, you know? I’ve already been stretching myself too thin with blogging since I’m trying to grow it into a freaking empire that Ican live off of in a year or two, so the extra daily medicine delivery chores seem even more tedious.
It doesn’t help that Mr. Pug still hates each and every one of the meds and still tries to eat everything that can basically kill him, but he is a dog…
How do you keep up with your pet routines?

Yesterday we tried out something new. We moved Miss Doxie into the kitchen with Mr. Pug when we went to bed. Our kitchen is downstairs and our bedroom is up.
Mr. Pug became a kitchen sleeper when I found out that he snores loudly and constantly. I need almost complete quiet to sleep (I like the white noise of the fan), so that just wouldn’t work. Mis Doxie has been sleeping in our bedroom since the first day we adopted her more than 5 years ago. She actually slept in our bed for the first 2 1/2 years…
I thought the extra socialization would be good for both of them. I also thought that I’d no longer trip over her in the morning or have to carry her down the stairs on bad joint days. She is 12 now, so the extra stair climbing isn’t very helpful on her arthritis.
She only barked once to let me know that we completely suck, but we didn’t hear anything out of her for the rest of the night. Hopefully this becomes a regular thing…we’ll see.
Where do your pets sleep?

My husband and I have separate ING accounts for most of our sub-goals: Emergency Fund, Taxes and Insurance, Auto and Home Maintenance, Vacation, and Fun Money accounts for each of us. Now I’m thinking of starting a special one just for our dogs.
Up to this point, we just absorbed extra pet expenses into our monthly budget. Even the big ones. But Miss Doxie is getting to be 12 1/2 years old and Mr. Pug isn’t ever going to be med free again. Doggy fund here we come, lol.
I’m thinking we’ll start by contributing $100 a month minus dog expenses. For example, if Mr. Pug’s allergy pills cost $10 and we buy a $45 bag of food, then I’ll put the other $45 into the dog account at the end of the month. Some months we actually have no expenses and sometimes they go over $100 (we’ll absord that for the first year), but at least this way the account will be building. Maybe the huge expenses will hurt less if I know I have it in the bank…we’ll see.
Do you have a pet fund? If so, how do you work it?

Mr. Pug is an allergy-ridden dog. These allergies have caused him to have skin infections, ear infections, and internal problems. Prednisone, a popular steroid, and a few other medicines have helped him to recover to about 99%. He still licks his paws, but at least he doesn’t look near death’s door anymore.
Well, after 3 months of being on steroids, our dermatologist wanted to run lab tests to see if they were badly affecting his liver or kidneys, so we had yet another visit about a week ago. $277 later he has a clean bill of health in regards to steroids and two new topical meds for his paws and face.
The only good news is that he is overall well again and does not have another appointment for 6 months. Yay, 6 months!!!
Any big pet expenses you’d like to vent about today?
